Happy Birthday Singapore!

Got these questions off the NDP website. Thought it'll be a good way to reflect about my homeland (ah...so patriotic...).

1. What makes you proud to be a Singaporean?

This little red dot can stand up against the other bigger lands. Not in terms of military power of coz, but our technology, workforce, living environment and multi-racial culture...and the fact that we have Singlish - a language that sets Singaporeans apart.

2. What is your most nostalgic memory growing up in Singapore?

Going for art classes at the CC, have lunch cooked by mum, before continuing with dance class at the same CC. And playing lanterns and candles at the playground below my block, with all my neighbourhood friends.

3. Where would qualify as Singapore's landmark?

Changi Airport! The rich and famous, politicians, tourists, businesmen, students and the returnees back for reunion - all need to pass through this landmark. Many of my ang mo frens tell me that they have a good impression of Singapore, simply by just transiting at Changi. Personally, I know I'm home when I reach Changi Airport - with the banners at the immigration check-points saying 'Welcome Home'.

4. Name a location where you think shows both Singapore's past and future and why?

Raffles Place/Boat Quay area. This is supposedly where Sir Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore and is the heart of our CBD and financial hub. As Singapore moves forward, the skyscrapers will continue to climb and the CBD will continue to play an important role in our future.

5. What is most unique to you about Singapore?

National Day parades and the NDP songs! I grew up with "Stand Up for Singapore", "Count on Me Singapore" ......

6. When you are overseas, what do you miss about Singapore?

Stay out late and know that you are safe, Mediacorp soap operas...and the food! My chwee kueh, chee cheong fun, cha bee hoon, mee siam, mee rebus, chicken rice, duck rice, char siew rice, wan tan mee, indian rojak, prata, char kwey tiao, fishball noodles, yong tau foo, mee hoon kueh, geylang tao huay & you tiao, prawn mee, rojak, popiah....you can imagine how deprived I am.

7. What is your most Singapore trait?

I got Singaporean trait MEH? I don't think so LEH. HUH? What you say?
My Singish is already considered a trait LIAO? Ok LOR.

8. Which NDP 2007 song do you identify best with and why?

Definitely "There's no place I'd rather be". The first time I heard the song, I teared. It just speaks so much to me since I'm overseas now. (and maybe because it's Kit lah) There are many places that I want to visit, there are many things I love about the place that I'm in now, but there's no place like home, and that's where I'd rather be.

9. Which aspect of Singapore's history are you most proud of?

The fact that we stood up against all odds and became a well-known dot in 42 years. Making history as we progress.

10. How do you celebrate/spend National Day every year?

This is the second year I'm not in Singapore during National Day. I will always watch the live telecast and run the corridor to catch the fireworks when I'm home. I still miss watching the parade live, and singing the NDP songs at the end of the parade - "We are Singapore"!

Happy Birthday Singapore!
